Based on my own experiences and that of many other
people I have met through my journey of healing, as well as all the stories
that I have read, I firmly believe the condition exists and that 99% of the
time it is caused by severe trauma. I don’t doubt there may be the occasional
therapist who will suggest to their patients that they are multiple and that
their patients, being vulnerable in therapy and wanting to please their
therapist, will try to create different personalities.
But I believe that, in the end, there are very
basic differences between someone who is making it up for some kind of benefit
and someone who has gone through horrific experiences and is in the deepest
emotional pain anyone can imagine. I think that the therapist who is simply
suggesting their patient be multiple and the patient creating the condition
know in their hearts what is true and what isn’t. As well, the person who
really has the condition and his or her therapist who witnesses the harrowing
recovery process their patient goes through knows in their hearts that this is
real and cannot be faked.
