Names and Naming

It seems that a lot of the time it is important for each personality to have their own name. It may be a way of honouring and acknowledging them. It may be a way to ensure that everyone is recognized and heard.

However, for some multiples the names may not be very important. It’s possible that they will all have the same name with I, II or III afterwards to differentiate between them. So for me we could have had Caer I, Caer II, Caer III, etc. Though that wouldn’t be very practical for someone like me who had a lot of personalities.

It’s also possible to have one name for a group of personalities. I had a group of 13 personalities who were simply called The Blue Ones.

Sometimes the personality is named after an emotion – Miss Angry, The Beast of Rage, The Censor, The Organizer.

We named some of us after runes (fortune-telling stones) – Othel, Isa, and Tir. We also named some of our personalities after insects – Caterpillar (or Cate for short), and Black Widow.

Sometimes personalities will have first, middle and last names.

Some may be named for a function they perform – The Driver, The Cook

Sometimes the personalities may have names but don’t want anyone else to know them as they feel too vulnerable having someone know their name.

This third personality called herself Jane, for no particular reason she could give. (The 3 Faces of Eve see BOOKS, ARTICLES)

All or almost all of Sybil’s alters had last names, and some had middle names as well. (Sybil see BOOKS, ARTICLES)
