What are the different types of personalities?

While every person can be quite unique in terms of the types of personalities they have, there are many similarities among multiples.

They can have …

human or non-human personalities;

objects;

spiritual entities such as shape shifters, angels, demons;

animals;

insects.

They can be any gender

male;

female;

transgender;

both genders (we had one personality who was both male
   and female)

Any race, nationality, skin colour …

Any age

There can be
twin personalities;
mirror-image personalities;
idealized, symbolic parents, children, teenagers, etc.

They might have very definite purposes …
to be strictly functional – meeting the external demands
   of the world;
to meet the psychological demands of the internal world – controlling switching, retrieving memories, etc.

Some personalities may be mute and somewhat autistic, especially infantile personalities or those who suffered extreme brutalization or forced drugging

These ‘alter’ personalities can assume almost any identity since they seem to be constructed on the ‘logic’ of dream or trance, in which anything is possible. Thus alters may be male or female, adult or children, human or non-human. Quasi-spiritual entities are not uncommon. Usually, but not always, there is one personality that the system as whole regards as the main identity which is present to others. Often different personalities are created for particular roles – e.g. going to work, being sociable, being sexual, etc. traumatised children are also commonly found. These may be guarded by special protector personalities, who may be hostile to the therapist if the children are perceived as being in danger. The degree of awareness of the overall system varies among the personalities, some having very limited awareness and others having considerable overview.” (The 3 Faces of Eve see BOOKS, ARTICLES)

I was born to talk to men who came for Karen. We would have long conversations. I’d get to know them and draw them in. Another part would come out to have sex with them. If they got to know us a little bit, they’d be less inclined to hurt us” (Switching Time see BOOKS, ARTICLES)

I was to be the perfect girl. I made sure James and Sara (her children) were christened and celebrated Communion. I tried to give them religious beliefs and a positive outlook as they grew up. (Switching Time see BOOKS, ARTICLES)

The overriding common denominators that allow characterization of alter personality types are the functions that the personalities serve and the affects and memories that they carry. Although each person with MPD is unique, some principles of organization are typical.” (Diagnosis and Treatment of Multiple Personality Disorder see BOOKS, ARTICLES)

Other notes about types of personalities

not all types may be found in a particular multiple.
