personalities are special-purpose alters. They usually have a narrowly-defined
purpose and role in the system.
[Eve Black] was vibrant with superficial
warmth and vitality, but her emotional range was evidently restricted to the
shallowest fringes of human experience. (The 3 Faces of Eve see BOOKS, ARTICLES)
They may have
one single skill or task – such as driving, cooking or parenting.
Two examples:
- for one multiple a personality was created to
express only frustration and anger for the rest of the personalities. It could
express a full range of anger (annoyance, frustration, and anger to rage) but
could not experience any other emotion.
- for another multiple, a personality was
created strictly to deal with the person’s in-laws who were intensely disliked
by the person. The only time this personality came out was to deal with the
in-laws.
In Switching Time (see BOOKS, ARTICLES) Karen had something she called “spoofs”. These
were fragment personalities but they had no names, only one memory each. Most
interesting is the fact that these personalities were not recognized by Karen as
actual personalities of any kind.
