For
someone who is multiple they may have specific personalities who take care of
traumatic memory, often called Memory Trace Personalities. They may also see
themselves as storing the memories in a special place.
For
me, I had The Keepers of Maura. These personalities kept all of my memories in
boxes in a place called The Storehouse which was in my mind, called Maura. I
had visual images of a warehouse-like room with boxes and boxes of files. These
were all my memories. When it was time for healing, usually in therapy
sessions, The Keepers would retrieve specific memories that I and the other
personalities would relive. They could even break up the memories into smaller
pieces so it wasn’t too overwhelming.
The Interpreter tells Stanley ‘When the avenue
from one or more of our minds to that of your client [the woman] is opened by
the Gatekeeper, we send memories. You know what confetti looks like: little,
shredded fragments of coloured paper. We send your client memories, seldom in
whole segments, but rather in those shreds; a flurry of them at times,
swooshing through the avenue of [the woman’s] mind. To give her or most of us
the whole picture at once would be too dangerous, it couldn’t be coped with. Our
pain would be too great.” (When Rabbit
