How does the person heal?

It is important to note that those who face the pain are deeply rewarded for all their efforts. In the end, the personalities feel deep relief from not having to pretend they are something they are not. Everyone gets their freedom. (Understanding Multiple Personality)

As I said at the beginning of this blog, I believe multiple personality to be not so much an illness as a creative defense mechanism. Therefore I don’t see the condition as something to heal from. Instead I see the healing process as twofold…

1    healing from the childhood trauma

2    managing the multiplexity

The trauma is the real source of illness in the person and must be dealt with in some way. The multiplexity needs to be addressed differently, where the personalities go through various stages until they learn how to work together in some form.

Healing the trauma involves remembering what happened, talking about it to a supportive person, and feeling the emotions that the person felt at the time but could not allow herself to feel.

The process of healing is long and painful. Finding someone who is able to hear the truth of the survivor’s traumatic experiences is a difficult challenge. [Many times] survivors experience countless revictimizations until they find someone who is able to listen to what happened. Once they find someone, it takes years of support before the trauma stops affecting them on a daily basis. (Understanding Multiple Personality Disorder)
