FALSE OR OVERDIAGNOSIS

There are many people claiming that MPD/DID is simply caused by therapists, called iatrogenesis (see GLOSSARY), but experts in the dissociative disorders field argue strongly against this notion.

However…

other illnesses may have some symptoms of MPD/DID and lead to a false diagnosis of the condition. Symptoms such as

  • abnormal amnesia (see GLOSSARY) for certain events;

  • a fragmented sense of identity;

  • lots of mood changes – especially in people with Bipolar Disorder and PTSD (HOWEVER, some people with MPD/DID might also have Bipolar Disorder and usually have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder);

  • some people with psychosis may talk about being inhabited by other people (HOWEVER, sometimes people with MPD/DID might also have psychotic episodes)
